Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, LEED AP, is a licensed landscape architect with 47 years' experience, spending most of his career with EDAW in Alexandria, Virginia. He has been a resident of Hollin Hills since 1988 and as a community volunteer has led the parks committee, authored a community guidebook about modern landscapes, “A House in the Woods”, and authored a chapter on modern landscapes in the book, Hollin Hills: Community of Vision.
His work incorporates site history into a narrative landscape that reveals the unique qualities of place. This approach has created landscapes that act as a catalyst for the revitalization of many American cities, including Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Wharf District Park in Boston, West Main Street in Louisville, and Ross’s Landing in Chattanooga. He is currently leading the design of a twelve acre deck park over the interstate highway in midtown Atlanta. Dennis has received over forty design awards and his work has been published in such magazines as Landscape Architecture, Urban Land, and Architecture. He has served as national President of ASLA and also as President of the Landscape Architecture Foundation. In 2022, both Wharf District Park and Centennial Olympic Park received Landmark Awards from ASLA Chapters. In 2023, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Potomac Chapter of ASLA. He has lectured at numerous colleges and has taught landscape architecture at Tulane University and SUNY ESF. |
