“The key to it all is the consensus of the community,” architect John Burns told members of the Hollin Hills community at an April 12 “reveal party” to unveil two new plaques for homes in the historic community. “Consensus is our underlying strength,” he added.

Opening the Friends of Hollin Hills event at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, Barbara Bogue, president, said the gathering “acknowledges our shared love of Hollin Hills.”

In 2013, the U.S. Department of Interior listed the community on the National Register of Historic Places as did the state on the Virginia Landmarks Register. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the Hollin Hills Historic Overlay District in 2022. At that time, Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck insisted on consensus, Burns said.

Jeff Vandersall, who headed the plaque design committee, explained that the design reflects the mid-century modern homes’ “sleek, unadorned, clean lines and simplicity.” They chose “white metals” fabricated in brushed stainless steel with etched graphics and lettering using the Neutraface font, rejecting traditional heavy brass or bronze plaques with cast letters.

A Neighborhood Effort Worth Celebrating

🌿 A Multi-Year Collaborative Effort
The Hollin Hills Historic Plaques are the result of a multi-year collaboration between Friends of Hollin Hills, architects, designers, and homeowners who cared deeply about getting every detail right.

Plaque Subcommittee:
  • Chair: Jeff Vandersall, Architect and FOHH Board Member
  • Hakan Topalhan, Architect
  • Robin Roberts, Architect
  • Edward Murphy, Architect
  • Design and computer graphic layout: Kevin Vandeman, Architect, HKS Architects
  • Jan Derevjanik, Production Prep and FOHH Designer and Board Member
  • Advisor to the Subcommittee: John Nolan, Architect and FOHH Board Member

🌿 Designed for Hollin Hills
The stainless steel design was thoughtfully shaped to reflect Hollin Hills' architectural character and to create a plaque that feels true to the neighborhood, both historically and aesthetically.

The plaques are 1/8" thick stainless steel, are exterior rated, and have a stud boss on back for mounting. The plaques are in Neutra font.

🌿 Approved by the DRC and CAHH
The final design was reviewed and approved by the Design Review Committee and the Civic Association of Hollin Hills, helping ensure it aligns with our shared preservation standards and neighborhood character.

These plaques are a visible expression of pride, preservation, and belonging.

Need to Know

Limited Order Windows

Plaques are available only during designated order windows throughout the year. Once a window closes, FOHH submits the full production order. Because stainless steel, engraving, shipping, and production costs continue to rise, introductory pricing will not last. This is the moment to act if you want the lowest available pricing.

Proof & Approval

After you place your order, you will receive a print proof to review and approve before production begins. If approval is not provided within three days, FOHH will assume there are no changes and proceed with production.

Pickup

Pickup will be coordinated at a Friends of Hollin Hills Committee member's home at a time that works for you.

Production Timeline

Plaques are ordered during designated order windows throughout the year. Once the window closes, FOHH places the full production order. All plaques arrive together, and you will be notified as soon as yours is ready.

Installation

You will receive clear installation instructions for easy mounting. If you prefer help, FOHH can recommend a handyman.

PLAQUE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (RECOMMENDED METHOD)

Position the Template
Place the plaque template where you want the plaque installed and tape it securely in place. Use a small level to ensure it is straight. Masking or painter’s tape works best to hold the template in the correct position.

Drill Pilot Holes
Using a 1/8" drill bit, drill a pilot hole in the center of each of the four marked holes on the template. The included threaded rods are 1/8" in diameter and 3" long, so drill at least 3" deep into the exterior wall.
(Note: Standard 2x4 studs sit about 3 5/8" behind siding and sheathing, so this depth should not reach the interior wall.)
Once complete, remove the template and tape.

Enlarge the Holes
Use a 5/16" drill bit to widen each pilot hole. This provides extra space for easier rod insertion and allows room for silicone to properly adhere the rods in place.

Attach Threaded Rods
Insert the four threaded rods into the mounting points (“stud bosses”) on the back of the plaque. Hand-tighten only—do not use pliers or tools.
Tip: Adding a stainless steel 3/4" outside washer between the plaque and mounting surface can improve stability and help distribute pressure more evenly.

Apply Silicone Adhesive
Use 100% silicone caulk (clear recommended). Cut the nozzle to create a 5/16" to 1/4" opening and puncture the inner seal. Fill each drilled hole with a generous amount of silicone. Wipe away any excess around the holes.

Mount the Plaque
Align the threaded rods with the filled holes and press the plaque firmly into place until it sits flush against the surface. Use masking or painter’s tape to hold it securely so it does not sag. Allow the silicone to cure for 24 hours.

Finish
Remove the tape once the silicone has fully set. Your plaque should now be securely mounted.
